Codes I (Invention), P (Publication), and C (Confidential)


When uploading your work, you may be asked to indicate whether your work falls under one of the following codes:

"I" 
(Invention)

When the work describes a patentable invention (see RA 8293, Chapter II, Patentability) which:


The work is automatically closed to the public while it is coded as "I". The work will not be accessible to the public until a patent application for the intervention has been duly filed. 


  1. Either 
    • place your work under embargo (this is the preferred strategy); OR
    • postpone depositing your work in the Repository.
  2. File your patent application. You have one (1) year to do so. The period of one (1) year is renewable upon written request to the College/Unit where the work was submitted as a requirement. The inventor is required to inform the University in writing, as soon as a patent application has been filed, after which the Academic Work will be classified under “F”.
  3. If you do not file for an extension for the embargo, it will be automatically lifted after one year.
"P" 
(Publication)
When you would like to reserve right to first public distribution of the work. Under Section 177 the IP Code of the Philippines, the author of a copyrighted work has the exclusive right to carry out, authorize or prevent the first public distribution of the original and each copy of the work.

The work is automatically closed to the public while it is coded as "P".  


  1. Either 
    • place your work under embargo (this is the preferred strategy); OR 
    • postpone depositing your work in the Repository.
  2. Publish your work within a period of one (1) year. This is the amount of time you have to exercise your right to the first public distribution of the Academic Work. After the lapse of one (1) year, the work shall be classified under “F”. If you do not file for an extension for the embargo, it will be automatically lifted after one year.
  3. If you have not published within that one year period, you can request to renew the embargo. Submit a written request to extend the embargo to the College/Unit where the work was submitted as a requirement.
"C" 
(Confidential)
When the work contains confidential information or personal information is embedded Contains confidential information or personal information is embedded, and no waiver of confidentiality or permission was obtained;

The work is automatically closed to the public while it is coded as "C". 


  1. Either 
    • place your work under embargo (this is the preferred strategy); OR
    • postpone depositing your work in the Repository.
  2. You have one year to do either of the following:
    • Obtain a waiver for the confidential information from the owner thereof, and/or permission from the subject of the personal information, for purposes of the public distribution of the WorkOR
    • Submit a redacted version of the Academic Work, where the confidential information and/or personal information are censored and/or obscured, in which case it will be classified under “F”.

If you have not published within that one year period, you can request to renew the embargo. Submit a written request to extend the embargo to the College/Unit where the work was submitted as a requirement.

You are required to inform the University in writing, as soon as the waiver and/or permission are obtained with copies of the written waiver and/or permission furnished the said College/Unit, after which your Academic Work will be coded as “F”.



Code "F" (Free)

When the work is not coded as any of "I", "P", nor "C", the work automatically falls under the category F (Free). The work can be made public while it is coded as "F".
