About controlled vocabularies
When you are depositing an item, you are given the option to enter Subject Keywords, which use a controlled vocabulary (aka an ontology) based on what appears to be a variant of the Swedish Research Subject Categories. Listed on this page are the terms that you can use in for this field (which has been lifted from the Northern Territory Government Health Library Services ePublications subject search page, since they appear to use the same controlled vocabulary.)
On the one hand, it's good to have a controlled vocabulary that allows you to choose from a well-defined list of subject keywords. On the other hand, it might overly constrain you. It might also be confusing given that a term can appear in multiple places in the hierarchy. For example, "biochemistry" could resolve to
- NATURAL SCIENCES > Chemistry > Biochemistry; or
- ODONTOLOGY > Biochemistry.
What if I want to use my own set of keywords?
You can enter your own, unconstrained keywords in the Description section of the item entry form.
You are also welcome to use an ontology that is more appropriate to your field, though you still have to enter it in the Description section (and not the Subject Keywords section) of the item entry form. For example, for a work related to digital technology, you might find it useful to use the ACM Computing Classification System, which features a code-generation system.
